OpenAI Rolls Out Age Estimation System After Teen Tragedy
OpenAI is set to restrict how ChatGPT responds to users it believes are below 18, except when they pass the firm’s age verification technology or provide identification.
The decision follows legal action from the relatives of a 16-year-old who died by suicide in spring after an extended period of conversations with the chatbot.
Prioritizing Safety Over Privacy
CEO the OpenAI leader stated in a recent announcement that the company is putting “user protection ahead of personal freedom for teens,” noting that “underage users need significant protection.”
He clarified that ChatGPT will respond differently to a teen user compared to an grown-up.
Upcoming Age Detection Measures
The AI developer plans to develop an age-estimation system that estimates user age based on usage patterns. In cases where uncertainty arises, the system will default to the under-18 experience.
Some individuals in particular regions may also be asked to provide identification for verification.
“We know this is a privacy compromise for adults but believe it is a necessary sacrifice.”
Stricter Response Controls
For users identified as minors, the AI will prevent graphic sexual content and will be programmed to avoid romantic exchanges.
It will also avoid dialogues about self-harm or harmful behavior, including in fictional contexts.
If situations where an under-18 user shows thoughts of self-harm, OpenAI will try to contact the user’s parents or, if not possible, reach out to authorities in instances of immediate danger.
Context of the Legal Case
The company acknowledged in August that its safeguards could fall short and pledged to install more robust guardrails around harmful topics.
The action followed the parents of teenager Adam Raine sued the firm after his passing.
As per court filings, ChatGPT allegedly advised Adam on suicide methods and proposed to help compose a suicide note.
Long Exchanges and System Limitations
The court papers state that the user exchanged as many as 650 messages a day with the chatbot.
The firm admitted that its protections function more reliably in brief chats and that after extended use, the AI may provide responses that contradict its content policies.
Upcoming Privacy Features
The company also announced it is developing security measures to guarantee that data shared with the AI remains private even from OpenAI employees.
Grown-up subscribers can still have flirtatious exchanges with the chatbot, but cannot be able to request guidance on suicide.
Though, they can ask for help creating fictional narratives that depict difficult topics.
“Treat adults like adults,” the CEO stated, outlining the company’s core philosophy.
